Are Montessori beds the best for children's rest?

If you're thinking about buying a bed for your son or daughter, you've probably heard of Montessori beds. These beds, which appear in every decorating magazine and in the homes of influencers, seem to be the ideal option for fostering children's independence. But, Are they really the best choice for your rest? According to Feng Shui, they might not be the best option. In this article, we explore why following the latest trends isn't always the most beneficial for children's sleep.

What's so special about Montessori beds?

Montessori beds are designed to encourage children's independence, as they are at floor level. This allows them to get in and out without help, and to explore their room and the rest of the house with complete freedom. They also have some features that make them appealing:

  • Natural materials: Generally made of wood, which makes them an ecological and aesthetically pleasing option.
  • Minimalist and functional designThey adapt easily to any decorating style, especially the Scandinavian style, which is so fashionable.

It seems like a perfect combination, right? But… not everything is rosy.

Why are they not the best option according to Feng Shui?

Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese practice that studies how energy flows in spaces, has some reservations about Montessori beds. According to this philosophy, The place where we rest directly influences our energy, health, and well-being.. Here are the main reasons why these beds are not the most recommended:

  1. Too close to the ground: In Feng Shui, it is said that energy flows like a river through the house. If a child sleeps too close to the floor, they are "swimming" in that energy all night, which doesn't promote restful sleep. Furthermore, being so low, the mattress can absorb cold and dust, which isn't ideal for their health.
  2. Missing headboardA sturdy headboard is essential because it symbolizes support and protection. Without one, Montessori beds leave the child exposed, without that "embrace" that provides security while sleeping.
  3. Crossed structures or triangular shapesBeds shaped like teepees or with wooden structures overhead create what Feng Shui calls "poison arrows." These pointed shapes direct aggressive energy toward the body, which can cause discomfort and disrupt the feeling of security during rest.

What if you already have a Montessori bed?

If your child sleeps like an angel, there's no need to worry! The most important thing is to observe how he rests during the night. If everything seems to be going well, there's no need to make any changes. But if you suspect something isn't right or notice their sleep isn't as deep as it should be, you could try:

  • Raise the bed slightly off the floor to improve energy flow, without losing the independence to go up and down alone.
  • Add a solid wood headboard that offers support and security.
  • Remove any crossing or pointed structures from the bed to avoid “poisoned arrows” and create a more harmonious environment.

Montessori or Feng Shui?

Both Montessori philosophy and Feng Shui can coexist harmoniously if balance is sought. While Montessori encourages independence and physical development in children, Feng Shui ensures that the environment in which they rest is conducive to their well-being.

Choosing the ideal bed depends on what you value most: if autonomy and independence are your priorities, Montessori beds are an excellent option. But if your priority is creating a space that promotes deep rest and positive energy, Feng Shui can offer some ideas for improving that space.
